A Domain with History
The Hakia.com domain has a remarkable history in the technology world. Originally launched in 2004, Hakia was one of the pioneering semantic search engines, a bold attempt to build search technology that could understand the meaning behind queries rather than simply matching keywords.
At a time when Google dominated through PageRank and keyword indexing, the original Hakia team asked a different question: What if search engines could actually understand what you're asking? They developed proprietary natural language processing technology that was years ahead of its time, attracting media coverage from The New York Times, Wired, TechCrunch, and other major publications.
The Rise and Fall of Semantic Search
The original Hakia search engine was ambitious and innovative. Their QDEX (Query Detection and Extraction) technology could parse natural language questions and match them with relevant content based on meaning. Ask "What causes inflation?" and Hakia would return explanations of economic principles, while keyword-based engines might return pages that simply contained those words.
However, competing against Google's scale proved impossible. By the early 2010s, the search market had consolidated, and the computational resources required to compete had grown exponentially. Google and other major players had incorporated semantic understanding into their own algorithms. The original Hakia ceased operations around 2014, and the domain eventually became available.
A New Beginning
In 2023, we acquired the Hakia.com domain to give it new purpose. We have no connection to the original Hakia team or company, we're an entirely new venture. But we recognized what made the original special and wanted to carry that idea forward.
The original Hakia tried to understand what you actually meant. We asked a simple question: what if you pointed that same idea at one of the hardest, highest-stakes searches anyone makes, deciding what to study and where? Most people navigate that choice with keyword-matching school directories and pay-to-play rankings. We thought it deserved a real search engine.
So we rebuilt Hakia as the semantic search engine for degree programs. Describe what you want out of life, and it surfaces the programs that fit, by meaning, grounded in real outcomes.
Our Co-founder
Hakia was co-founded by Taylor Rupe, who holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Oregon State University and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Washington. This dual background isn't incidental, it's central to our mission.
The computer science training provides the technical foundation to build sophisticated research tools, analyze complex datasets, and create technology that scales. The psychology background brings understanding of how people learn, make decisions, and navigate major life choices like selecting a degree program or career path.
Together, these disciplines inform everything we build: technology in service of education, data in service of better decisions, and research that actually helps people, not just impresses search engines.

Taylor combines technical expertise in computer science with a deep understanding of human behavior and learning. His dual background drives Hakia's mission: leveraging technology to build authoritative educational resources that help people make better decisions about their academic and career paths.
Our Mission Today
Hakia helps people figure out what to do with their lives, and how to get there. We're starting with the fields we know best and expanding across all of higher education. Whatever you want to study, computer science, psychology, nursing, business, or anything else, the goal is the same: understand your real options by meaning, not marketing.
Behind every search is real data: degree programs, salaries, graduation rates, and costs, aggregated from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and IPEDS, so what you find reflects outcomes, not ad budgets.
Our Vision
Higher education is one of the biggest investments people make, in time, money, and opportunity cost. Yet the information available is often incomplete, biased by advertising, or simply overwhelming.
We believe choosing what to study should start with a real search, one that understands what you actually want and answers with the programs that fit. Our vision is to be the place you go to figure out your path, matched by meaning and ranked on the outcomes that change a life.
Technology is our starting point because it's where our expertise runs deepest. But the engine we're building, semantic search over real outcomes data, extends to every field. Psychology, healthcare, business, the trades, liberal arts, every path deserves the same honest search.

Honoring the Legacy
While we have no connection to the original Hakia, we respect what they attempted to build. The semantic search concepts they pioneered in the 2000s have become foundational to modern AI systems. Today's large language models, vector databases, and semantic search engines build on ideas they helped popularize: understanding meaning rather than matching keywords, parsing natural language queries, and delivering contextually relevant results.
Our Tech Insights section reflects this heritage, offering deep technical analysis of the AI and search technologies that have transformed the industry. From how transformers actually work to the history of semantic search, we provide technical depth that connects the past innovations to today's AI revolution.
